Make your own grain spawn- set yourself up for success
I am not a fan of kits (like Midwest Grow Kit's XL Grass Loving Grow Kit) that include ready-to-inoculate sterilized grain spawn.
Here's why:
You have no idea what temperature conditions the grow kit will experience during the shipping process to you.
If the delivery truck is hot (and most of them are) your sterilized grain spawn will be hot, and therefore will be very inviting for, yep, you guessed it...bacterial growth and contamination.
As a beginner especially, I have seen this time and time again. You get these all-in-one kits and have very little success because you weren't willing to take the proper time and steps to ensure your first time around is a success.
Let's face it...most people attempt to grow mushrooms once and give up because they fail.

- Unicorn bags
- Rye berries
- Micronutrients
- gypsum
- perlite
- Calcium carbonate (eliminate if your coco coir substrate is ph balanced already)
- vermiculite (optional)
- Pressure cooker
- Cheesecloth
- Bag sealer/or you can use a vacuum sealer (vacuum function turned off)
- 400 grams (0.88 lbs) coco coir substrate

Grab the below items regardless if you are using Midwest Grow Kit's XL Grow Kit or following along my free eBook download or my grow book)
- Kitchen gram scale if you don't have one
- 10:1 water:bleach (in a labeled spray bottle)
- Hydrogen peroxide (in a labeled spray bottle)
- Gloves (optional, or you can just wash your hands really well)
- Grow light + adapter
- Programmable thermometer
- Light mister spray bottle (for spraying crop and mushrooms, with spring water or boiled water that has cooled)
- Programmable timer (for 12-hour on, 12-hour off light cycle)
- Drying rack (I just use the racks on my food dehydrator WITHOUT the heat)
- Damprid drying kit if you live in a humid environment
- Mason jars for storage
