"Colors seem brighter on my walks, birdsong is clearer, and I just feel happier."
A client shared with me about how she feels the day after microdosing mushrooms.
I've been microdosing for almost five years now, and I can definitely attest to this.
As a writer, the days following a microdose bring a flood of insights, clarity, and new perceptions. It's like clearing energetic blockages that were hindering my creativity.
When I microdose specifically for work, I find myself completely "in the flow," deeply present in my writing process.
The key takeaway here?
You don't need to microdose every day.
There's so much positive healing energy that unfolds in the days after your microdose—the rest days—that you're actually robbing yourself of those experiences and healing opportunities if you dose daily.
In healing, rest (or yin energy) is just as crucial, if not more so, than stimulation (yang energy).
If the noticeable effects are still present the following day, it shows the benefits of not microdosing daily.
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
-John Lubbock
Psilocybin isn't addictive and is generally very safe, especially in microdoses.
However, if you feel compelled to microdose every day, it's worth examining any potential addictive tendencies. We all have them, so self-forgiveness is key.
Addiction is common with a history of trauma.
While there aren't any studies on daily microdosing, the amounts used are so micro that the risks are minimal.
Even large doses of psilocybin have shown very few side effects.
Many studies *do* confirm the link between stress reduction (facilitated by rest) and improved immune function, which is crucial for healing.
The guidance against daily microdosing comes from the sheer volume of healing, insights, and awareness that arise during the "off" time. You need that time for integration.
Do I personally ever microdose on consecutive days?
Yes, sometimes.
I find it helpful for my writing and creative process.
But I always follow it up with several days off to integrate and rest, even from writing.
I might also microdose multiple days if I'm skiing or immersed in nature.
Again, I always make sure to take breaks afterward. It's something I feel I need.
A promising study published in JAMA Psychiatry in 2022 titled "Single-Dose Psilocybin-Assisted Treatment for Alcohol Dependence: A Randomized Clinical Trial" showed significant results.
This study found that psilocybin-assisted therapy, combined with psychotherapy, resulted in a substantial reduction in heavy drinking days among participants compared to those receiving a placebo.
Honestly, I'm WAAAYYY more concerned about the side effects of the average 4 prescriptions per person in the US than I am about the risks of a microdosing mushrooms practice.
If you thrive on structure, a protocol like:
Might serve you...
Or one that works for YOU.
But, if you have rigid expectations and boundaries, maybe an intuitive practice might serve you best.
Personally, I don't follow or recommend a strict protocol. I believe it can block the intuitive, mystical energy of the experience and following my intuition keeps me in a flow state.
Being in a flow state is where true happiness, creation and abundance come easily.
Mushrooms can strengthen our intuition, which is always more trustworthy than the logical, critical mind. Thoughts and even deep-seated beliefs can originate from external sources. Intuition, however, is our own inner compass.
Once we cultivate a trusting relationship with our intuition, we can, in co-creation with our higher power, rely on its guidance above all else.
Microdosing mushrooms helps us shed the layers of false ego built up from past experiences by enhancing our most important sense: intuition.
You'll deplete your supply faster.
If you grow your own magic mushrooms, maybe this is a non-issue for you.
Microdosing mushrooms everyday also builds up a tolerance (if you seek to “feel” your microdose more).
The medicine, regardless of tolerance or dose, is still in the background working her magic on your neurology.
Also, be aware that frequent microdosing without breaks can intensify emotions, which is why psilocybin isn't addictive.
Confronting your inner "monsters" constantly isn't appealing, especially if you have a history of trauma or PTSD (see my article on that topic for more information).
Even experienced psilocybin users, especially those who macrodose, often feel the need for extended breaks. These experiences are profoundly healing and awakening, but also intense.
Constant microdosing can have a similar effect. Too much stimulation can be detrimental.
Remember the importance of rest.
Here's a suggestion: Microdose for a month, then take a month off. Journal your experiences during both periods and see what you notice.
Finally, I want to acknowledge your courage in seeking healing through microdosing mushrooms.
It's not always an easy path, but one for brave change-makers who crave growth, enlightenment, peace and healing.
That is what you will receive if you truly desire it.
I honor you and your courage.
Blessings on all your journeys.
