"How long does microdosing last?"
I get asked this question a lot, and my answer often pleasantly surprises folks...
Welcome!
You might be new to microdosing mushrooms.
You're in the right place and I'm so glad you're here.
Picture this:
A gentle sense of light euphoria, coupled with a deep presence to this now moment like you've never experienced in your life.
This delightful experience is often associated with microdosing mushrooms.
Although the experience described above can be true for a lot of us, the experiences we have are vastly as unique as the individuals we are.
As you prepare to explore this fascinating world, I'm here to guide you through everything you need to know.
Microdosing, in case you're new to the term, is the act of consuming a negligibly small dose of psychedelic mushrooms, also known as "shrooms," which doesn’t cause dramatic changes in your consciousness but instead subtly tweaks your mood and cognitive functions.
Contrary to popular belief, the effects of microdosing mushrooms don’t end after the commonly cited 4 to 6 hours.
Sure, some of the immediate effects wane around this time, but the real magic happens beyond this window.
Now...
You might be wondering, "How long does microdosing last?" beyond the first 4-6 hours?
You see, the mushrooms continue their work, very subtly in the background of your neurology and psyche, for up to 48 hours and longer…
During these first 48 hours, your heightened awareness might make you feel colors more vividly.
As well as casting a golden glow on the world around you, the mushrooms encourage an inner warmth, a spreading sensation that echoes the rhythm of the earth while allowing you to connect more deeply with nature and yourself.
The basic concept of microdosing is nothing new. Albert Hofmann, who first synthesized LSD in 1938, considered it one of the drug’s most promising, and least researched, applications. He was among the first to realize its antidepressant and cognition-enhancing potential, famously taking between 10 and 20 μg himself, twice a week, for the last few decades of his life.
Paul Austin
Many clients in our community report the sensations experienced on the day of microdosing differ significantly from those felt the following day.
Psilocin, the active form of psilocybin in magic mushrooms, is excreted from your body within 12 hours, with some evidence stating it can be as long as 1-3 days.
The feeling that one experiences after the initial 6+ hours is due to the stimulation of your nervous system and expansion of consciousness.
Beyond the experience of a single microdose and the ensuing 48 hours, the longer-term impact is where the microdosing mushrooms truly shine.
Prolonged use helps emotions to grow wings, taking them on an exciting journey of highs and lows with you holding the reins, feeling more than ever before.
This could be considered the latent gift left behind by the mushrooms, similar to how a teacher brings out the hidden potential in a student.
Regularly schedule month-long or longer breaks from microdosing.
When answering the question "How long does microdosing last?", it is worth mentioning...
A word of caution…
Microdosing magic mushrooms is not always rainbows and unicorns.
As stated above, one feels the highs higher, and the lows lower.
Why would you want to feel the low, less desirable emotions like sadness, despair, loneliness, depression, MORE intensely, you ask?!?
Keep in mind this is the mushrooms working FOR YOU.
If you have a history of trauma and PTSD, read this article.
The less desirable emotions we experience are your body's way of signaling what needs to be addressed with gentleness, compassion, and care.
Keep in mind, the intense emotions soften with a prolonged microdosing practice and a reverent integration practice, like:
For example, at the time of this article, I am currently grieving in my own life.
I’ve noticed with the last 3 microdoses, I’m super low energy, depressed-feeling and not motivated to do much else other than rest, contrary to how I'm feeling without a microdose.
In this case, and always with a microdose, I:
This isn’t always how I feel on a microdose.
Sometimes I feel very creative, in the zone, full of joy and happiness, or something else completely different.
As humans, we often let our egos shield us from our true feelings and experiences.
One of the most profound aspects that mushroom enthusiasts share is the intriguing sensation of feeling more in sync with the universe.
Imagine the blaring white noise of life softened to a gentle whisper, leaving behind a sense of unity and attachment to every living entity.
Knowing this, what should you expect while microdosing mushrooms?
Expect the unexpected.
Each person’s experience is unique and the results are rarely predictable.
The sentiment is, often, that the mushrooms take you where you need to go, not necessarily where you want to go.
One consistently reported outcome of microdosing mushrooms is a heightened sense of awareness, including present moment awareness.
This could amplify your current emotions or guide you towards a reflection of your inner secrets, those typically relegated to the subconscious corners of your mind.
Microdosing can induce a sense of harmony within oneself that is otherwise elusive.
It's almost like achieving the perfect balance or union within your body, mind, and spirit.
Imagine...
A symphony of tranquility, all thanks to the humble mushroom.
Even though side effects and medication interactions are rare at any dose of psilocybin, especially a microdose, it still demands consideration.
I would also exercise caution when mixing SSRI antidepressants and microdoses of psilocybin because they both affect the serotonin system in the brain. While an adverse reaction combining SSRIs with a microdose isn’t likely according to Fadiman’s site, these kinds of antidepressants can lessen the effects of full-dose psychedelics and will likely do the same with microdoses.

Keep in mind, the beauty of psilocybin is, even though you might FEEL a dampened effect, say with a larger microdose, the mushrooms are still working her magic on your psyche and neurology in the background.
Be mindful of respectful use, and heed an understanding of both its limitations and possible side effects.
If you're intrigued by the world of microdosing shrooms, researching thoroughly, and consulting an expert or experienced individuals is paramount before embarking on this journey.

A big part of healing is digging deep and sharing openly our biggest fears.
A LOT of people are drawn to microdosing mushrooms but have mycophobia- a fear of mushrooms.
A powerful way to transmute fear is to physically write it down and share it with people.
Take this opportunity to let something go and propel yourself and possibly someone else towards a happier, more authentic life.
